Obituary

Anne Elizabeth Galloway Hubbard, 87, died peacefully in her home in Columbia, South Carolina on June 11, 2013, surrounded by her family. She was born on September 14, 1925, in Clio, South Carolina to the late Delilah H. and Charles B. Galloway. Anne was Valedictorian of the Clio High School Class of 1942 and graduated from Columbia College in 1946 with B.S. in Science. While at Columbia College, she was president of the junior class, a member of the Student Council, a member of Alpha Kappa Gamma, selected for "Who's Who Among American Students," and voted one of the outstanding seniors of her graduating class. She was a member of the Columbia College Alumnae Association and served one year as its Vice President.

A lifelong educator, Mrs. Hubbard taught science both in the Richland County Public School System and at James H. Hammond Academy, now The Hammond School. She instilled a lifelong love of learning in her students and possessed a unique ability to help students understand how science applied to everyday life. After retiring from teaching, Mrs. Hubbard earned her S.C. Realtor's license and worked for Bob Capes Realty for many years before finally retiring. She was an active member of Shandon United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Wesley Fellowship Class, a member and former president of the United Methodist Women, a member of the Board of Trustees, a Confirmation Class teacher, a member of the first class of Stephen Ministers, and a tireless volunteer for many years.

Mrs. Hubbard is survived by her husband of 65 years, David Ray Hubbard; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Rick Morris of Dallas, Texas; son, Charles David Hubbard; and grandson, Kevin Allen Gibson, also of Dallas, Texas. In addition, Anne is survived by her sister, Mrs. Charlotte Law of Florence, S.C. and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and their husbands, and many dear and constant friends.

Mrs. Hubbard will be remembered as a loving wife and mother, a dear and attentive friend, a brilliant and patient teacher and a courageous woman of faith who battled numerous health challenges throughout her life with quiet grace and dignity.

The family wishes to thank her caregiver and friend, Judy McGinnis, for her tireless care and service and the staff of Amedysis Hospice for their respectful and encouraging support over the last months of her life. Each of you has been a blessing in the lives of our family.

A memorial service celebrating Anne's life will be held 2 o'clock, Monday, June 17th at Shandon United Methodist Church, followed by a reception with the family in Wesley Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider a donation to Shandon United Methodist Church, 3407 Devine Street, Columbia, SC 29205, in her memory.
