Arlie Herin Kay, 95, of Columbia, died Sunday, March 11, 2018 in Concord, NC, where she had resided for the past year. Born in Pinckney Township, SC, on October 25, 1922, she was a daughter of the late John St. Pierre and Beatrice Hughey Herin. Mrs. Kay taught kindergarten and preschool for 40 years beginning at Logan School on Elmwood Avenue, followed by teaching at Eau Claire Presbyterian Church and ending at Eastminster Presbyterian Church from which she retired. She was active for a number of years in the old Columbia uptown YMCA. Mrs. Kay resided at Laurel Crest Retirement Community until the summer of 2017.
Survivors include her daughter, Carole Lynne Kay Shurig of Concord, NC; a son William A. Kay of Sullivan's Island, SC; a brother, John Samuel Herin; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Kay; and a half-sister, Pauline Harris.
The funeral service for Mrs. Kay will be held 2 o'clock, Thursday, March 15th in Smith Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 1420 Washington St., Columbia, with burial in the churchyard. Rev. David H. Lauten will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service in the Atrium of Jackson Hall. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
