Aubrey Williams "Mac" McSwain, Sr., 89, of Columbia, passed away on October 29, 2014. Born in Darlington, SC, to the late James H. McSwain, Sr. and Nellie Latisha Williams McSwain on March 26, 1925, his family moved to Columbia in 1933. He graduated from Columbia High School and Dickenson's Business College. Mac worked for Greyhound Bus Lines, retiring after 36 1/2 years. He then became an independent contract driver and traveled extensively over the US.
Mac began attending Park Street Baptist Church in 1933 and joined in 1937. He served there as a deacon, choir member, bass soloist and Sunday School song leader. Mac had a life-long love for music, singing with the Youth for Christ group, the Columbia Choral Society, the Men's Apollo Chorus, and the Arpad Darazs Singers.
He was a life member and past master of the Earlewood Masonic Lodge #371 and a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was a member of the Greyhound Fellowship Club, the Southern, National and Georgia Amputee Golf Associations and the Keenagers Bowling League.
A Little League coach for 12 years, he later assisted in forming the Christian Woman's Softball League and coached the ladies from Park Street Baptist.
Survivors include sons, Aubrey W. McSwain, Jr. (Jo) of Irmo, and Tim McSwain (Mary Beth) of Blythewood; five grandchildren, Allison, Kelley, Lindsay, James and Blake; seven great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Mac was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Betty Anne Mills McSwain; brother, J. Harless McSwain, Jr.; and sister, Barbara Young.
The funeral service for Mr. McSwain will be held 3 o'clock, Sunday, November 2nd, at Park Street Baptist Church, with Rev. Lawrence Dennis officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, with Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends from 10 o'clock until noon, Saturday morning, at the church. The End is here! So Mote It Be. Amen!
