The Rev. Austin F. (Sonny) Robertson, Jr., 76, of Columbia, died Tuesday, January 22, 2013. Born October 30, 1936 in Columbia, SC, his parents were the late Austin Fulton Robertson, Sr. and Marguerite Wise Robertson of West Columbia, SC.
Rev. Robertson attended The University of SC before earning his Master of Divinity degree and was ordained by the South Carolina Lutheran Synod. He also earned a Master of Education from USC.
Pastor Robertson served Lutheran parishes in North and South Carolina until his retirement in 1996, including Grace Liberty, NC, Holy Cross, Charleston Heights, SC, St. Johns, Pomaria, SC, St. Marks, Blythewood, SC and Mt. Pleasant Lutheran, Saluda, SC. He was also employed at Midlands Technical College as a student counselor and director of student financial aid, and was currently a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
He received a commission in the United States Naval Reserve-Ready as a Lt. JG. He resigned in 1977 as a Lieutenant.
Austin appreciated life, loved humor, was something of a poet. He also loved serving and caring for his pastoral flock, and was keenly aware of how many blessings God gave him, even though he knew most of them were undeserved.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Robertson; children, Rachel Jacobs, and Jo Margaret Healey; step-children, James, Elizabeth, and Catherine Chesnutt; grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Sarah Crawford, John Austin Simmons, Callie Simmons, Ian Healey, Seth Healey, and Katharine Chesnutt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Bruce Robertson.
The memorial service for Pastor Austin F. Robertson will be held 11 o'clock, Friday, January 25th, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 3909 Forest Dr, Columbia. The Rev Paul Wollner, The Rev. Kris Litman-Koon, The Rev. Dr. Herman R. Yoos, III, and The Rev. Roy Butler will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service in the narthex.
