Rev. Aziel Washington Jones, 93, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 10, 2016. Born in Butler, AL, on February 22, 1922, he was a son of the late Rev. R K Jones and Leila Mae Tate Jones. Aziel served as a musician in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1945, and afterward graduated from Moody Bible Institute and Wheaton College, where he met his wife of 64 years, Marian Westling Jones. Later he finished his M.A. at Columbia International University.
Aziel and Marian served for more than forty years in Costa Rica, doing Bible translation and church planting among the Cabécar Indians. Aziel was a man of great perseverance, who leaves a legacy of hard work and faithful service. Prayer and the Word of God formed a vital part of his life. His strong singing voice gave expression to his heart for God. He was always ready with a smile and will be remembered for his love for the Lord and his strong sense of family.
Aziel is survived by his wife, Marian Westling Jones; children, Peter Jones (Debbie), Priscilla Kew, Susanna Shastri, Steven Jones (Cameron), Elizabeth Sanchez (Noel), Timothy Jones, Philip Jones (Saukeen), and David Jones (Lucy); 34 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by five sisters, Matred Perdue, Sarah Mae Cosby, Ruth Edna Sims, Lois Holt, and Martha Hyles.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Rev. Haniel Jones, Rev. Lael Jones, Rev. Joel Jones, and Rev. David Jones; and three sisters, Jedidah Jones, Phoebe Johnston, and Mary Taff.
A private graveside service for Rev. Jones will be held at Woodridge Memorial Park on Corley Mill Road in Lexington, SC, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 P.M., on Monday, February 15, at St. Andrews Evangelical Church, 2609 Seminole Road, Columbia, SC 29210. The family will greet friends following the memorial service. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family. Memorials may be made to the Missions Fund of St. Andrews Evangelical Church.
