Barbara Alice DeVillier McBride passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 8, 2013, to reunite with her son, Andy, her daughter, Brenda; and numerous other family, friends and acquaintances.
After spending most of her life in Texas, she resided at Finlay House for the last 11 years, leaving behind many friends who she entertained with piano music played by ear. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Columbia, and served as a lector and piano accompanist for weekly services at Finlay House. She also supplied music for Sunday services at the Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community for several years. She loved reading and animals, especially her cat, Gracie. She accepted her long illness with dignity, always expressing gratitude toward her caregivers and rewarding them with hugs. She was well known for her hugs.
Her children are daughter, Eileen Schell and husband Gordon of Columbia; son, Louis DeVillier of Austin, Texas; and son, Robert King and wife Gloria of Robertsdale, Alabama; two grandchildren, Sherry Lynn Crowson, Jarrett Milford; two great grandchildren, Corey Pippin and Avoree Milford, all of Shepherd, Texas.
A memorial service for Ms. McBride is planned for Thursday, September 12th, at 11 am at St. John's Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to either St. John's Episcopal Church, 2827 Wheat Street, Columbia, SC 29205; Finlay House, 2100 Blossom Street, Columbia, SC 29205; or a charity of one's choice.
