Obituary

Barbara Chapman Moore, 84, died July 28, 2015. Surrounded by her three daughters at the end, her last words were words of love to her girls.

Born September 7, 1930 in Sanford, Florida, she was the daughter of Bert E. and Rosamond Radford Chapman. She attended Huntington College in Montgomery, Alabama, where she earned a B.A. in Sociology. Her professional life as a social worker would define her for the rest of her life. After college, she worked for the Florida Department of Public Welfare and later at the Coastal Center in Ladson, South Carolina, first as a social worker and then as Director of Admissions, retiring in 1993. Even in her last years and with the memory loss that comes with Alzheimer's, she sought to encourage, coordinate, and engage with the people around her.

She met her husband, Jim, on a blind date in 1957 and knew immediately she had met the man she would marry. They were engaged within the week and married three months later. They had three girls in the first five years of married life, and Barbara found one her deepest callings—that of a mother. She was the fun of the family, planning birthday parties and baking amazing cakes, sewing Halloween costumes and matching Easter dresses. She adored her grandchildren and took great delight in being part of their lives.

She was an active volunteer throughout her life, serving as a Girl Scout leader for many years. Barbara served for a number of years on the Board of Directors of the Dorchester County Habitat for Humanity and was chairman of the selection committee for that organization. She volunteered at Second Chance, a consignment store that contributed proceeds to various charities in Summerville, and through the Volunteer Center with the Golden Rule Award.

She was an active communicant of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Summerville until she moved to Columbia in 2010, a past president of the Episcopal Church Women and a member of St. Catherine's Chapter of the ECW.

She is predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Jim, who died in May; and is survived by her three daughters, Susan Prinz, and her husband Ron, Pam Breen and her husband Bob, and Amy Moore; three much loved grandchildren, Elizabeth Prinz of London, Thomas Breen and William Breen, both of Columbia; and her brother, George Chapman of Augusta, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity, PO Box 1685, Summerville, SC 28484.
