Bernice "Bunny" Hill Brooks, 92, of Columbia died Sunday, October 27, 2013 at the Calhoun Convalescent Center in St. Matthews. Bernice was born March 9, 1921, in Columbia, to the late James Carl Brooks and the late Sadie Hill Brooks. Bernice graduated from University High School. She was employed and retired from Columbia Products Company in Columbia, after which she operated the firing range at The Ballistic Center in Columbia. During WWII, she built aircraft wings at Congaree Air Base. Bernice was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two sisters, Juanita Brooks Pedersen of Columbia, and Sadie Brooks Smoak of Orangeburg; a sister-in-law, Helen Brooks; five nieces and two nephews; and a host of grand nieces, grand nephews and friends whose lives were enriched by her loving kindness and generosity of spirit. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Maxwell "Mac" Brooks and Julius Carl brooks; and two brothers-in-law, Alfred S. Pedersen and James B. Smoak.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at 2 o'clock at Shives Funeral Home, 5202 Colonial Dr., Columbia, SC, with the Rev. Dr. James W. Thompson III, and the Rev. Jeffery T. Scott officiating. Interment will follow at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1 o'clock.
