Obituary

Betty Ortmann Barrett, of Columbia, joined her Heavenly Father, Saturday, January 4, 2014. The youngest of three children, she was born to F. W. Ortmann and Jessie Kennedy Ortmann on December 17, 1929 in Anderson, SC.

Mrs. Barrett celebrated 84 amazing years, facing many medical adversities that few survive. She was a graduate of USC, and a member of Delta Zeta Sorority. She would go on to earn her Master's Degree as well.

After teaching in Jenkinsville for one year, she married her sweet heart and soul mate, the late Robert G. Barrett. They would have a daughter, Betty B. Sutton, and a son, Robert G. Barrett, Jr.

Betty resumed teaching at E. L. Wright Middle School for a number of years, and would later move to Midlands Tech helping countless numbers of adult students obtain their G. E. D. During that time period she was active in I. R. A. , S. C. I. R. A. and Wil Lou Gray. She also taught Sunday School at St. John's Episcopal Church.

Betty possessed a deep and abiding faith in her Lord. Her never-ending love for family was apparent to all.

She is survived by her daughter, Betty; son, Robert, Jr.; grandchildren, Christopher N. Bush, Michael Gardiner (Paula) Bush, Melissa B. (Craig) McLaughlin, and Sara Jennifer Bush; great-grandchildren, Christian and Samantha Carpenter, Haley, Bailey, and Cameron McLaughlin, Lynndsey, and Hunter Bush, and Chase Michael Bush.

Betty lived a wonderful life, showing her family how to love unconditionally and sharing her deep faith in God. I am sure angels carried her to Heaven quickly, as she was indeed a treasure.

The funeral service for Mrs. Barrett will be held at 11 o'clock, Tuesday, January 7th at St. John's Episcopal Church, 2827 Wheat Street, Columbia with The Rev. Scott R. Fleisher officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
