Betty Lee Baumgartner, 88, of Columbia, died Tuesday, July 31, 2018. Born July 23, 1930, in Oelwein, IA, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Zada Woods Rueber. Mrs. Baumgartner spent most of her life in Iowa and relocated to Columbia several years ago to be closer to her family. She attended Gustavus Adolphus Nursing School and was a retired Licensed Practical Nurse. Mrs. Baumgartner was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 218, where she served as the first president for two years. She enjoyed quilting, as well as crocheting and had donated many quilts to Lutheran World Relief. Mrs. Baumgartner, along with her husband, Don, were very active with the Lions Club and American Legion. They never missed an opportunity to place American flags on the graves of our fallen heroes on holidays and other special occasions. She deeply loved her family and especially enjoyed their time with one another.
Mrs. Baumgartner is survived by her daughter, Pam R. Helland (Larry); grandchildren, Hans (Stephenie), Kaari, Katie, and Rebekah; great grandchild, Sophia; as well as her sisters, Dee Snodgrass and Pat Houser. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, Don Baumgartner; daughter, Barbara Raffel; and her brother, Melvin Rueber.
A service for Mrs. Baumgartner will be held 2 o'clock, Saturday, August 4th at Shives Funeral Home, 7600 Trenholm Rd. Ext., Columbia. The family will receive friends following the service.
