Mrs. Betty Jo Marsh Carson, 80, of Columbia, died Sunday, April 22, 2018. Born in Darlington, SC, October 7, 1937, she was the daughter of the late James Foster Marsh and Vera Holland Holton. Mrs. Carson received her B.A. in English from Columbia College and attended the University of Virginia and Georgia State University for postgraduate studies. She found her calling as a psychometrist in public schools. In this role, Mrs. Carson devoted much of her effort to supporting underserved children. Her service included work for Head Start, through the Committee on Educational Research at the University of South Carolina; for Project Success in the Cobb County School District in Atlanta; and as an educational evaluator in Lexington School District Two in Cayce-West Columbia.
Mrs. Carson had a strong faith and was a longstanding member of Seven Oaks Presbyterian Church. She relished being a mother. For her beloved alma mater, she was active in the Ariail Alumnae Club, the Columbia College Alumnae Council, and the Special Events Committee. She supported women in need through her active involvement with Killingsworth Home and Zonta International. Mrs. Carson also served a variety of roles in the Gardendale Garden Club, Symphony League, and Town Theatre. She enjoyed a wealth of friends.
Mrs. Carson is survived by her son, Dr. Evan Wiley Carson, and was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William Edgar Carson.
The Memorial Service for Mrs. Carson will be held at 2:00 o'clock, Sunday, April 29th at Seven Oaks Presbyterian Church, 530 St. Andrews Rd. A reception will follow. The family gives special thanks to her devoted friends, to members of the Fellowship Class, and to the staff and volunteers at The Heritage at Lowman and Lutheran Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Seven Oaks Presbyterian Church or to the charity of one's choice.
