Obituary

Betty Lou Caulder Sauls McDuffie, 83, of Columbia, died Tuesday, May 17, 2022. Born December 6, 1938, in Sumter County, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Raymond L. and Anna Boyd Welch Caulder.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed for 26 years with Shakespeare Fishing & Tackle and for 15 years with Richland School District 2. Mrs. McDuffie was a devout Christian and former member of Dentsville Baptist Church. She was a current member of Spring Valley Baptist Church, where she was involved with the BYCOTA Life Group. Mrs. McDuffie was a member of the Eastern Star, Dentsville Masonic Lodge No 398 AFM chapter. She was the matriarch of her family and cherished every moment spent with them. She especially loved to follow her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren on Facebook.

Survivors include her children, Becky Brown (Alan), Joey McDuffie (Brenda), Tommy Sauls (Rachel), Chris Sauls (Kim), Tim McDuffie (Sue), Joan McGee (Wayne), and Tony McDuffie (Melody); brother-in-law, Bill Thomas; sister-in-law, Lucy Caulder, as well as 22 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fletcher Hewitt McDuffie; twin infant sister, Barbara Jean Caulder; brother, Ray Caulder; sisters, Jane Owens, Martha Thomas, Valerie "Tootie" Burrows; as well as her brothers-in-law, Lloyd Owens and Joe "Red" Burrows.

The funeral service for Mrs. McDuffie will be held at 12:30 o'clock Tuesday, May 24th, at Spring Valley Baptist Church, 91 Polo Rd, Columbia, SC. Burial will follow at 2 o'clock at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Rd, Columbia, SC.

The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church in the lower atrium beginning at 11 o'clock.

Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
