Obituary

Betty Tapp Dukes, 90, of Columbia, died Thursday, July 29, 2021. She was the widow of Samuel Johnson Dukes and they had been married for 64 years.

Born February 25, 1931, in Inman, SC she was a daughter of the late James Sexton and Edna White Tapp. Betty was a member of Belmont Baptist Church in Columbia for more than 50 years.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Carol Joan Dukes; sister, Sue Sanders; brothers, Jay and Leonard Tapp; half-brothers, Gus and Duel Tapp, as well as her step siblings, Milan Ramsey and Pauline Ramsey Lowery.

She is survived by her sons, Keith Dukes (Diane) of Johns Creek, GA and Craig Dukes (Pam) of Fincastle, VA; and brother, Joe Bill Tapp of Spartanburg, SC. Betty was blessed with five grandchildren, Kaitlyn Tucker (Alan), Patrick Dukes (Lauren), Haley Wheeler, Kristina Werner (Chris), and Taylor Dukes; as well as six great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Samuel, Harrison, Laney, Daniel and Cora.

The graveside service for Betty will be held 10 o'clock Tuesday, August 3rd at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia SC 29229. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC 29223, is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Belmont Baptist Church, 901 Mason Road, Columbia SC 29203.
