Obituary

Betty B. Hoyt, 90, a resident of the Washington area since 1951, died in Columbia on Friday, May 25, 2018.
Mrs. Hoyt was a native of Matthews, North Carolina. She graduated from Mars Hill College with an Associate Degree and from Wake Forest University with a Bachelor of Arts. Upon graduation, she began her career as an English teacher at J. W. Cannon High School in Kannapolis, NC.

In 1951, Mrs. Hoyt moved to the Washington area where she worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a Position Classifier. She did graduate work at Strayer College and George Washington University. Mrs. Hoyt later met Donald H. Hoyt at the Presbyterian Church of the Pilgrims where they were married in 1955. In 1957, she resigned from the FBI but returned to the workplace in 1972 in the Arlington Public Schools from which she retired in 1993 as a secretary to the Director of Special Education. She was active in the Church of the Pilgrims where she served as Vice President for the Women of the Church, Sunday School teacher, and a director of Vacation Bible School. Later she moved her membership to the First Presbyterian Church in Arlington where she served as Deacon and Secretary for Women of the Church.

Survivors include two children, Ann H. (Dr. Daniel) Janosik of Columbia, SC and Dr. Clifton L. Hoyt of Taipei, Taiwan; a granddaughter, Anna J. (David) Cooke, and their son, Peter Edmund, all of Greenville, SC; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Lee Hoyt, who died in 1970, and her husband of 41 years, Donald H. Hoyt, who died in 1996, as well as her siblings, Peggy A. Trimble, Louise B. Haislip, and Amos Boyette.

A memorial service will be held 3 o'clock, Monday, June 25th, at First Presbyterian Church in Arlington, VA. Burial will be private in National Memorial Gardens, Falls Church, VA. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, Columbia, SC, is assisting the family.
