Betty Jeanne Barrett Sutton (BJ), of Columbia, joined her Heavenly Father, Friday, April 28, 2023. The oldest of two children, she was born to Robert Gardiner Barrett and Betty Ortmann Barrett on April 1, 1952 in Columbia, SC. She was predeceased by her husband, Jay T. Sutton.
She is survived by her brother, Robert G. Barrett; her four children, Christopher N. Bush, Micheal G. Bush (Paula), Melissa B. McGlaughlin, and Sara Jennifer Bush; grandchildren, Christian and Samantha Carpenter, Chase Bush, Lynndsey and Hunter Bush, and Haley McGlaughlin; close family friends, Cindy Fulmer, Ruth Wania, Lawrence Beckham and Michelle Horner.
BJ's whole world was her family. Family gatherings and planning for the next adventure was where she shined the most! She loved her time with her grandchildren, some of which referred to her as "Big G," "My Peep" and "Grand momma." They spent countless hours on shopping trips, watching shows, and playing cards together. So many memories were created of all of them together, cutting up and just sharing pure love and laughter.
BJ truly loved all holidays, Christmas the most. She thrived in carrying on family traditions. Crafts, decorations and homemade chocolate candies were her specialty. Holiday decorating traditionally started early and stayed late.
BJ had an incredible love and respect for the ocean. She and all of her family through the years would spend many hours walking and seashell hunting. She distilled the love of nature and family bonding at every opportunity possible.
A master at delegating, she loved being in charge and telling her brother, children and grandchildren what to do.
Devoted to our Heavenly Father, she spent many years teaching Sunday school and running the children's nursery. She loved putting on the plays for the church in which her children participated. Now and always, may she rest in peace.
A memorial service will be held at The Anglican Church of the Epiphany located at 2512 N Beltline Blvd. Columbia, SC 29204 at 3:00 o'clock on Saturday, May 6, 2023. The family will receive guests immediately following the service at the church.
