Mr. Billy Eugene Willoughby, 77, of Columbia, died on Saturday, December 6, 2025. Mr. Billy E. Willoughby was born in Woodward, Oklahoma in 1948.
He is survived by 2 daughters, Tammy York and Tracey Ann Knight; 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Debbie Thrasher, Melodee Barela, and Theresa Sweatfield; and 1 brother, Gary Willoughby.
Mr. Willoughby served in the Marine Corps for 4 years from 1967 to 1971. He served 13 months in Vietnam. Once out of the Corps, Billy returned to his hometown of Woodward, OK with his wife and baby daughter. There he worked in the oil fields for a year. After 14 months, The Willoughbys moved back to Southern California, where he worked until he re-entered the military serving in the United States Army. Billy served several years in the army including 2 tours in West Germany. Upon leaving the Army,
Billy worked security at airports in Las Vegas and Roswell, NM. While living in NM, Mr. Billy suffered a massive stroke that caused him to be disabled for over 25 years. While in NM his sister, Debbie, looked after him. For a short time, his brother Gary and sisters Melodee and Theresa took care of him. Family brought Mr. Billy back to Columbia, SC to be treated by Dorn VA Hospital. For over 23 years, Sue Willoughby-Grossman cared for Mr. Billy, checking on him daily. His daughter, Tammy York and granddaughter, Ashley Black visited as often as they could. Billy was bedridden for the last 3 years and 4 months of his life, which required 24/7 care. He was cared for by a volunteer neighbor, Maria Adkison; his AV Aide, Kayla Gavin; Mrs. Sue Willouhby-Grossman and Mr. Karl Grossman. Billy had an excellent VA Primary Care Team that came out to the home, Dr. Easterling, Octavia, Faith, and Jason. They each were a blessing. Billy was in the care of Crescent Hospice at the time of his passing. He was provided with dignified care by hospice nurses Ashley Macon and Nancy Montgomery. Billy is greatly missed and loved by all.
