Burrel Donald Floyd, Sr., 91, of West Columbia, died Friday, December 4, 2015. Born in Columbia on May 8, 1924, he was a son of the late Luther Dowie Floyd and Letha Verna Brown Strickland Floyd. Mr. Floyd served his country as a member of the United States Armed Forces just as every generation of his family since the Revolutionary War. As a US Army veteran, he fought in five major battles during WWII serving in England, Belgium, Holland, and Germany, and later served as a member of the US Navy on the USS Iowa. Following discharge, Mr. Floyd had a career with the United States Postal Service, serving as Post Master for the University of South Carolina. He enjoyed sports, especially football, and played quarterback for Olympia High School. Mr. Floyd was a former Mason and member of the American Legion. He was a faithful member of the West Columbia Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he was active for many years.
Mr. Floyd is survived by his sons, Donald Walker (Fay), Van Don Floyd (Louise), Luther Lewis Floyd (Becky), Burrel D. Floyd, Jr., and Joseph Andrew Floyd, Sr. (Cathy); 24 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Woody Strickland (Hallie); and sister, LaVon Yandle. In addition to his parents, Mr. Floyd is preceded in death by his wife, Emma Branham Floyd.
The funeral service for Mr. Floyd will be held 11 o'clock, Tuesday, December 8th at the Windsor Lake Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2350 White Pine Rd, Columbia, with interment to follow at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 until 8 o'clock at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road, Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext. Columbia. A viewing will also be held 10 o'clock Tuesday morning at the church. Memorials may be made to the West 1st Columbia Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Humanitarian Assistance Fund, 1330 Whippoorwill Drive, West Columbia, SC 29169. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
