Capt James Richard Ross, US Army, Ret., 79, of Columbia, died Friday, December 29, 2017. The son of the late Pink Bennett Ross and Mamie Marie Coleman Ross, he was married to Geneva Edge for 55 years. After his love for the Lord, he loved his family and was always there for them. A retired captain in the US Army, he served in France, Korea and Vietnam. He was a part of the Army's first school to train drill sergeants. James enjoyed bluegrass and gospel music and attended Capital City Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his sons, Glenn Ross (Kimberly), Gordan Ross (Tara), Greg Ross (Stacey); grandchildren; Grant, Gabrielle, Nicholas, Noah, Martina, Makala, and Bennett Ross.

A funeral service will be held 1 o'clock, Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at Capital City Baptist Church, 2243 Percival Rd, Columbia, SC 29223 with The Rev. Paul Monroe officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends, Tuesday from 5 until 7 o'clock, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia.

Memorials may be given to Capital City Baptist Church.
