Carey Morgan Shackelford

Carey Morgan Shackelford, 95, of Columbia, died on Monday, May 18, 2026. Born on June 20, 1930, in Garnett, SC, he was the son of the late Bessie Orvin and William Francis Shackelford.

Carey retired from Bellsouth after 42 years. His last assignment was as Director of Public Relations for South Carolina. He served in the Army National Guard for 30 years and retired as a major. Carey was active in United Way, Rotary, Boy Scouts, Red Cross, Cancer Society, Junior Achievement, Chamber of Commerce and local churches, where he and his family resided. He served as chair of Aiken County Hospital Board during his assignment in Aiken SC. After Retirement, he enjoyed wood working, hunting, fishing, golf, traveling and church.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Jan Shackelford; daughters, Susan (J.D.) Burke and Lisa (Michael) Fields; grandchildren, Morgan (Robert) Liner, Alexander (Lacey) Burke, Abigail (Byron) Quinatoa, Jackson Fields; and great-grandchildren, Ellie and William Liner, Grayson, Cara Leigh and John Michael Burke. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Carey was predeceased by sisters, Frances (Jim), Nunnery and Anne (A.C) Ownbey and brother, Harvey (Beth) Shackelford.

The memorial service Mr. Shackelford will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at 1 o’clock at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Columbia, SC. Reverend Dr. Douglass Key will be officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.

In honor of Mr. Shackelford’s life, the family requests memorials be made to the charity of choice or to Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Columbia, SC.
