Carl O. Nates, Jr., 91, of Columbia, died on Monday, January 13, 2025. Born on April 23, 1933, in Columbia, he was a son of the late Carl O. Nates, Sr. and Chessie Lee Nates. Carl proudly served his country in the United States Army and previously attended Jackson Creek Baptist Church. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a master carpenter and cabinet builder. Carl enjoyed being with family, all things outdoors, and traveling. He had a very friendly disposition and never met a stranger.

Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Nates; children, Barbara J. Motley (Anthony) of Columbia, Mike O. Nates (June Estes) of Pontiac, Carl Rick Nates of Columbia, and Sam R. Nates (Len) of Virginia; grandchildren, Robert "Rob" S. Bailey, III (Shirley) , Braxton Nates, Samantha R. Nates, Noah P. Nates, and Coby Tyler Nates; great grandchildren, Zachary Bailey (Kerri Buynack) and Dylan Bailey (Mackenzie); as well great, great grandchildren, Carter Levi Bailey and Atlas Lane Bailey and step grandchildren, Jordan and Haley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Frank Eugene Nates, Robert "Bobby" E. Nates and Edward Nates, and his stepson, Phillip Fouche, III.

The funeral service for Carl will be held at 2 o'clock, Thursday, January 16th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext, Columbia, SC. Burial will follow at Jackson Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, 7778 Two Notch Rd, Columbia, SC.

The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home beginning at 1 o'clock.
