Carlton Wilkes Thompson, affectionately known as Gamecock Jesus, 70, of Elgin, passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2023. Born in Orangeburg, South Carolina on September 12, 1953, he was a son of the late Pringle C. Thompson and Mary Blackmon Thompson. He is survived by his loving wife, Judith Dubil Thompson; he and Judi shared a strong marriage of devotion and support for each other since May 19, 1973.
Carlton was a graduate of Branchville High School and earned his BSN from the University of South Carolina in 1982. He enjoyed a very prosperous nursing career providing exceptional care with integrity and a strong focus on patient advocacy. Carlton was employed for more than 33 years at the William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Affair Medical Center, as well as Lexington Medical Center, and the former South Carolina State Hospital. He lived a life of service in the hospital, in the arena, and at home.
Carlton may be best known for his passion and support for Gamecock Athletics. He had been attending USC sporting events for more than 50 years. Carlton could be found in the stands at the men's and women's basketball games waving his beloved Gamecock flag. He also had a faithful attendance supporting all things Gamecock including the Volleyball and Baseball teams. Always recognizable, his long hair, beard, signature bandana, and most importantly his enthusiasm earned him his superfan status. The USC women's basketball team has retired his seat (which he never used) in the Colonial Life arena for the remainder of the season in his honor.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Gregory M. Thompson, and Nicholas M. Thompson; grandson, Fletcher Thompson; grandchild, Pac Thompson; sister-in-law, Susan D. Glaser; nephew, Eric J. Glaser (Catherine); uncle, John L. Wagner; aunt, Myrtle K. Bruno (David); as well as many loving cousins. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by brother, Pringle C. Thompson, Jr.; mother and father-in-law, John M. Dubil and Jacqueline W. Dubil; brothers-in-law, John M. Dubil, Jr. and Richard Glaser.
The Celebration of Life for Mr. Thompson will be held at 4 o'clock on Wednesday, December 13th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home until 7 o'clock.
