Carol El Dean (she hated the middle name) Young was born in Greenville, SC, March 14, 1935 to Irma Fayard Young and Stephen Young, son of Senator Stephen M. Young of Ohio.
Carol graduated from Paris High School in Paris, France in 1953 and from The University of South Carolina with a journalism degree in 1957. Her career started in advertising in the Washington DC area immediately upon her graduation. She merged into government work with the Food and Drug Administration in the DC area and eventually ended her career with The Consumer Product Safety Commission, specializing in child safety. Over her 30 years of service, Carol lived in Atlanta, GA; Tampa, FL; and Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
Her career netted her many friends along the way. Carol never met a stranger, having had the most sincere and loving connection to her many friends and family. She was generous to a fault and had a bleeding heart for the less fortunate among us. Her many gifts to family, friends, and strangers alike will never be matched.
She is greatly missed and survived by her sister, Vicki Wansley; nephews, Willie Wansley (Bean, Sprout, and Callie), Justin Wansley (Bianca, Mia, and Morgan); nieces, Susie Wansley Nix (Bo and Cooper), Jenny Wansley Toole (Ryan, Conor, and Sadie) as well as friends far and wide.
A reception celebrating a life well lived will be held 2 o'clock Saturday, September 21st at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC.
Above all, please do not waste your money on flowers. Donate to the charity of your choice in Carol's name. If you knew her at all, you would understand.
