Mrs. Carol Kemper Monroe's Obituary

Carol K. Monroe, 91, of Columbia, died on January 21, 2015. Born in Cleveland, OH on November 29, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Lydia Wefel Kemper. Mrs. Monroe was a member of Living Springs Lutheran Church. She graduated Suma Cum Laude from Oberlin College in 1945, and started her teaching career in Oberlin, OH. When she relocated to South Carolina, Mrs. Monroe taught at Hammond Academy in Columbia for many years and retired in 1986. Teaching was one of her great passions. She also enjoyed church, reading, gardening, painting and spending time at the ocean.

Mrs. Monroe is survived by her five sons, Tom (Christine), Jeff (Joyce), Fritz (Debbie), Jon, and Barry (Holly); and her two daughters, Pat Monroe Bartucca, and Becky Lydia Monroe Marshall (Jim); 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Jack Hill Monroe; three brothers, and three sisters.

A memorial service for Carol K. Monroe will be held at 11 o'clock, Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Living Springs Lutheran Church, with The Rev. Eric E. Fink officiating. The family will greet friends at a reception following the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Living Springs Lutheran Church, Handbell Choir, 4224 Hard Scrabble Rd, Columbia SC, 29223.
