Obituary
Carol Margaret Smith, 77, originally of Hop Bottom, Pennsylvania, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2023 in Blythewood, SC surrounded by her loving family. Born in Nicholson, Pennsylvania, on June 5, 1946, she was a daughter of the late Jack E. Hoadley and Dorothy Stoker Hoadley.
Carol was the loving wife of 55 years to the late Philip Maurice Smith. She graduated from Lackawanna Trail High School in Factoryville, PA and went on to work for the International Salt Company in Clarks Summit, PA, as head teletype operator. Carol later decided to pursue a career as a cosmetologist and earned her license from the Empire School of Cosmetology in Scranton, PA. In 1968, their love for the industry inspired Carol and Philip to open Mr. Philip's Hair Salon which remained under their ownership until 2001. She had a servant's heart, which led her to become a Certified Emergency Medical Technician for Hop Bottom Fire and Rescue, where she was active as a Team Captain for five years and First Lieutenant for ten years. She was a charter member of the Hop Bottom Quick-Response Team.
Carol's greatest passion in life was being "Nanny" to her two grandchildren, Shelby and Jack. The most important thing to Carol was her family. She was nurturing and expressed her love by being a caregiver to others in her family and community. Carol is fondly remembered for being strong-willed and a true mama bear. Throughout the years, she enjoyed dancing, vacations with dear friends John and Rosemary, playing slots on her phone, and watching her programs such as QVC, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and Days of Our Lives. Her favorite sweet treat was a steady-supply of Oreo cookies.
Survivors include her son, Jason Smith (Robin), grandchildren, Shelby Smith and Jack Smith; sister, Diane Norton (Steve); sister-in-law, Mona Hoadley; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved brother, David Hoadley.
The family would like to express their gratitude towards Heart of Hospice and Kaley Alberts for the exceptional love and care shown towards Carol and her family throughout this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hop Bottom Hose Company, P.O. Box 22 Hop Bottom, PA 18824. Per her wishes, there will not be a visitation or funeral service.
