Obituary

Caroline Haltiwanger Kohn joined the Church Triumphant on Saturday, March 12, 2022. The graveside service for Mrs. Kohn will be held at 11 o'clock, on Friday, March 18th, at Elmwood Cemetery, 501 Elmwood Avenue, Columbia, with the Rev. Dr. Tony A. Metze officiating. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 1715 Bull Street, Columbia, SC, 29201. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.

Caroline lived a life devoted to her Lord, His church and her family and friends. Her ready smile and love of life will be remembered by the countless people her life touched. Born in Columbia, South Carolina on September 15, 1922, Caroline was the daughter of the late Rosa Lee and Deems Haltiwanger. She graduated from Jenkinsville High School and attended Newberry College. On February 28, 1942, she married the late A. Hart Kohn, Jr. Caroline was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She was active in the life of the church serving in may ways to include; being a member of the church council; teaching Vacation Bible School and Sunday School; member of the Christian Homemakers Class; and WELCA Circle member and leader. She faithfully delivered Meals on Wheels to Gonzales Gardens for many years. Caroline served as President of the Newberry College Women's League and was a member and secretary of the Lowman Home Board of Trustees. She was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities Degree from Newberry College.

Caroline was preceded in death by her husband, A. Hart Kohn, Jr. and daughter, Rosalie Ruth (Rosie) Kohn.

She is survived by two daughters, Caroline K. Crump (Tom), and Pat Kohn; three grandchildren, Laura Anne Crump Kirkland (Hank), Samuel Robert Cullum (Heather), Hart James Barber (Alison); four great-grandchildren, Jessica Caroline Smith (Jordan), Bailey Kirkland, Britt and Will Cullum, Henry and Finn Barber; two great-great grandchildren, Larkin Caroline and Graham Smith; a Norwegian exchange student daughter, Gerd Anne Westergaard (Harald); and a sister, Jane Keels; and nieces, nephew and cousins. Great Mom, as she was lovingly called, will truly be missed by her family and all who knew her. The family would like to thank her devoted caregivers and friends, Dreamer Harrison, Dorothy Days, Mamie Corley, Mary Ann Gibbs, Lillie Waiters, Johnny Waiters; the staff of Still Hopes (Congaree Floor); and Prisma Health Hospice Care.
