Carter Eaves Montgomery, 69, of Winnsboro, died Wednesday, February 15, 2017. Born in Columbia on January 31, 1948, he was a son of the late John Alexander and Lottie Mae Carter Montgomery. A graduate of Clemson University, Carter worked towards a PhD with concentration in Animal Nutrition. At one point in his career, he was a nutritionist at Riverbanks Zoo and retired as a systems analyst with the state of South Carolina. Carter loved Clemson football and the outdoors. He was known for his great sense of humor, was always loving, kind, and very supportive and set a good example for his children. Carter was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease 16 years ago and maintained a positive and strong attitude. He was a member of Northeast Presbyterian Church.
Carter is survived by his wife of 39 years, Jan Liles Montgomery; his children, Leigh Montgomery of Chattanooga, TN, John Montgomery (Laura) and Will Montgomery of Columbia; grandchildren, Natalie, Zane, Ian, Miranda, Ella, Willow and Lila. Also surviving are his brother, Al Montgomery (Sheila) of Blythewood and sister, Carole Hunt (Frank) of Elgin; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The service for Mr. Montgomery will be held at 3 o'clock on Sunday afternoon, February 19th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, at 7600 Trenholm Road Ext, in Columbia, with Dr. George D. Crow III officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 o'clock on Saturday evening, February 18th at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Jim Chappell, David Eison, Ed Hurley, Guy Leary, Skip Liles and Terry Liles. Honorary pallbearers include Tommy Clawson and David Huggins.
