Catherine "Cathy" LeGrand Humphries (Berry), of Columbia, died on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. Born in Columbia, SC on January 16, 1963, she was the daughter of Ellender Humphries Berry and the late James Brevard Shirley.
Cathy was a graduate of Cardinal Newman, class of 1981. She then went to Midlands Technical College for her associate's degree & would later transfer to Columbia College where she finished with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Cathy enjoyed doing church activities with her mother & the senior adults at First Baptist Church. She was also an active member of the USC Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Cathy was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Lexington. She was a member of the Coed life group but also had many fond memories from her years in the youth group & high school choir at First Baptist Church, Columbia. She often reminisced on their missions or choir trips to Kentucky, New York City, & Washington DC.
Cathy was a sports fan at heart. In her earlier years, she played softball for the church league & went bowling with her friends until her body would no longer allow. When she became an aunt, known as "Aunt Cacky", she shared her passion for sports with her niece & nephews. She often drove to Charlotte when Matt was younger, just to see "her boy" play baseball. Over the last 5 years Cathy was a fixture on the sidelines for the PAC football & baseball games where she was found cheering on her nephew, Ben. She was most fond of taking him to his away games because that was their "Cacky & Bubba time". Cathy also loved watching her niece, Abby, compete at her gymnastics meets. She often looked forward to the ones in Myrtle Beach or Charleston because the beach was Cathy's happy place & she got to share that experience with her. At home, Cathy enjoyed spending time with her mother watching most any kind of sport on the television but the USC Women's Basketball was by far one of her favorites to watch.
Cathy spent more than 20 years working as a tax preparer. Although she had given many of her clients to her mother, she would often spend the busiest time of year assisting her when needed for their faithful tax clients at LeGrand & Co. Cathy spent the last 10 years working as a home health care aide in both the private sector providing care for the elderly and most recently for Hands & Heart in West Columbia. Her favorite job was being an aunt though.
Cathy was all about her niece, nephew & dogs. She loved spending time with her niece & nephews but she loved cuddling up with her dogs, too. They brought her so much peace & happiness even in her final days at home. At the end of the day they could be found surrounding her chair or up in her lap. Cathy was definitely a "dog mom".
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her stepmother, Darlene Shirley; half-sister, (Jane) Elizabeth Reilly; half-brother, Michael Shirley (Jordan Thie); step-brother, Frank Berry, Jr. (Michelle); step-sister, Jodi Salter (Jeff); nephews and niece, Matthew Reilly, Abbigail Reilly, & Benjamin Reilly. She is also survived by her beloved four legged companions, Charlie, Max and Mollie. She was preceded in death by her father; step-father, William Frank Berry; and brother-in-law, Mark Reilly.
The Celebration of Life for Cathy will be held at 1:30pm, on Monday, February 16, at Northside Baptist Church, 4347 Sunset Blvd, Lexington, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 12:30pm, in the church hospitality room, and again following the service at the home of her sister, Elizabeth Reilly.
