Mrs. Ceola Gilliard Scott, 84, of Gadsden, died Saturday, October 10, 2015. Born in Charleston on January 24, 1931, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Nell Brown Gilliard. As a child, Ceola worked with her family at the Folly Beach Pavilion, and at age 14, she moved to New York City. After high school, she worked for Western Union for 13 years, and returned to Columbia in 1981 with her husband, the late Willie Lee Scott. Ceola later moved to Gadsden with her husband and she spent many happy years working with the Stevenson family. She was a longtime member of St. Mark Baptist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir. Ceola will be deeply missed by her family and many dear friends.
Ceola is survived by her sons, Louis Gilliard (Anise) of New York City; Maurice Sykes (DeShaun), of Columbia; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Delia Washington (George) of Charleston; aunt, Lucinda Singleton; special nieces, Michelle Washington and Maggie Floyd; five brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law; beloved friends, Kay C. Martin, Jimmy C. Stevenson, Frances M. Stevenson, Sarah and Douglas Cottingham and their children, Mac and Lila Cottingham, and Brittany and David Wingo and their daughter, Olivia Wingo. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Charles Gilliard; brothers, Ernest, Herbert, and Arthur Gilliard; and sister, May Singleton.
A funeral service for Mrs. Scott will be held Sunday, October 18, at 2 o'clock at St. Mark Baptist Church, with The Rev. Dr. Secaida Howell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service at a reception to be held in the church. Memorials may be made to St. Mark Baptist Church, 1456 St. Mark Rd., Gadsden, SC 29052.
