Obituary

Charles John Jackson "Charlie" was born on May 19, 1988 in Columbia, S.C. On April 21, 2020 at 31 years of age, he embarked on his final gig. He never met a stranger and was fierce and loyal to his friends. He delighted those around him with funny things he said and did. His soul was filled with music. It was his center and constant companion. His talent was astonishing; yet greater still was the size of his heart, his compassion, and humility. He taught himself piano and guitar, with a little help from his mom and dad, and excelled as a drummer and later as studio producer. In 7th grade he won a talent competition with his original song, "Anything is Possible." In 2002, at 14 years old he toured the country with The Young Razzcals Jazz Project and performed at the world-renowned Telluride Jazz Festival. He continued his music performing in his high school band programs both at North Hampton High in VA and at Lexington High in SC (he also dabbled in a little theatre), where he graduated. From there he branched out performing and writing music with Aviary Fire, Versus the Robot, and Brigades on the Pure Noise Record Label, touring the nation and beyond. He made dear friends all across the country and in Canada. His original music is familiar to a wide audience and his production skills can be heard on many recordings of local bands. He is a familiar icon in the Columbia music scene, especially with his most recent project Pet Peeves, and will be sorely missed by musicians of all genres.

He was a culinary talent as well, most recently as wonderful chef at Hampton Street Vineyard for the past five years.

He is survived by his mother Debbie Smith, father Boyd Jackson, stepmother Vicky Jackson, two sisters Jessica Jackson and Jody Jackson, a brother Jake Smith and two nieces Jasmyn and Jaelyn, and many cousins, aunts and uncles, and grandparents. He held family high as a priority, and we are forever transformed by his presence in our lives.

His is a light that will forever burn bright in the souls of his family and many friends.
