Obituary

Charles Edward Tucker, age 78, passed away on August 6, 2023. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, S.C., Sunday, August 13, at 2:00 pm. with the Reverend Dr. Derek W. H. Thomas and the Reverend Bryan Bult officiating. Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation following the service in Jackson Hall at First Presbyterian Church.

Edward was born on June 4, 1945 in Rock Hill, S.C., son of the late James Richard Tucker and Juanita Adams Tucker. He was proud to have attended Winthrop Training School (kindergarten through 12th grade) where he formed many meaningful, lifelong relationships. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of South Carolina in 1968. While a student, Edward served on Student Council and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. While serving as President of the Interfraternity Council, Edward was instrumental in securing top national acts to perform for students, including the Righteous Brothers, Mary Wells, The Temptations, the Four Tops, Johnny Mathis and James Brown. It was only natural for Edward to parlay his love of shagging to his philanthropic interests as a Founding Member of the Darla Moore School of Business' Annual Shuck and Shag Alumni Oyster Roast. He was a lifetime member of the Alumni Association where he served on its Board of Governors. Edward was an avid Gamecock fan and loyal member of the Gamecock Club. He loved everything "garnet and black" and particularly enjoyed attending football and baseball games.

Edward's professional career in banking and finance spanned 48 years and he was well respected as a man of honor and integrity. He began his career with C&S Bank upon graduation and in the late 1980s became a partner, President and Chief Executive Officer of Financial Selling Systems. In 2009, he was a founder of Pelmetta Performance Solutions and led the firm until his retirement in 2016. Edward's involvement with Columbia Rotary Club provided continued professional and relational enjoyment.

Edward was a Member of First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, where he served as a Deacon, member of the Men's Bible Class, and the Bible studies on Tuesday and Friday mornings. He used his financial expertise by volunteering in the Finance Office every week. Edward cherished his time at First Presbyterian and the friendships he cultivated through these experiences.

Edward loved his family and the title "Papa T" lovingly bestowed upon him by his treasured grandchildren. He began and ended each day with a devotional study. His days were guided by scripture and his commitment to self-improvement was evidenced by the inspirational messages written almost daily on note cards. He enjoyed a good book and working in his yard. He was patient, kind and made expressions of gratitude a habit. Edward always gave God all the glory. In his final days when others would come to pray for him, Edward would conclude with a prayer for them, as well as for those less fortunate. He was a true Southern gentleman in every respect; a remarkable listener and conversationalist, and a devoted friend.

Edward is survived by his wife of 51 years, Martha King Tucker; a daughter, Elizabeth Tucker Hendrix (Jim) of Greenville; and three grandchildren, Billy, Tucker and Louise Hendrix. He was predeceased in death by his sister, Dora Tucker Jones.
