Mrs. Claire G. Nezvesky's Obituary

Claire Gottlieb Nezvesky, 81, of Columbia, died Tuesday, May 23, 2017. Born in Columbia, SC on June 19, 1935, she was the daughter of the late George S. Gottlieb and Esther Blankfield Gottlieb.

Claire graduated from Dreher High School and attended the University of Georgia. She served as a B'nai B'rith Girls president and was a member of Beth Shalom Synagogue. She was married for 53 years as a military wife to her beloved husband, Israel Nezvesky, before his death. She was a classical music enthusiast and pianist and once played for Liberace in her brother-in-law's antique store on Gervais Street. Claire also enjoyed volunteering as a precinct worker for the Richland County Election Commission and for the Red Cross in the pharmacy at Moncrief Hospital on Fort Jackson.

Throughout her travels around the world, Claire never met a stranger as she always enjoyed striking up conversations with people she met. Outside of her family, her true passion was sports. She was an energetic supporter of her beloved Gamecocks and a lifelong Dodgers fan. She also loved to play Mah Jongg and Bridge.

Survivors include her two daughters, Jill Carr (David) of Blythewood and Debra Stombler (Jon) of Blythewood; her sister, June Safran; grandchildren, Joshua Stombler, Justin Stombler, Elena Carr, and Stephanie Carr; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A graveside service will be held 10 o'clock, Thursday, May 25th at Beth Shalom Arcadia Lakes Cemetery, 1401 Arcadia Lakes, Columbia, with Rabbi Jonathan Case officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at Tree of Life Congregation, 6719 N. Trenholm Road, Columbia, from 11 o'clock until 1 o'clock. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beth Shalom Synagogue, 5827 N. Trenholm Rd., Columbia, SC 29206, St. Jude Children's Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl, Memphis, TN 38105, or to Harvest Hope Food Bank, 2220 Shop Rd., Columbia, SC 29201. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
