Col Henry B. Kemp, Jr., USMC (Ret.) was born in Edgefield, SC on March 16, 1923, and raised in Trenton, SC. He died to this life on September 28, 2018, at the age 95. Joining Ebenezer Baptist Church at the age of twelve years, he graduated from Trenton High School as Valedictorian. Mr. Kemp completed his bachelor's in Commerce from USC where he met his wife, Sarilu. He was a proud Marine Corps Reservist, receiving a Purple Heart while serving in World War II. Employed in the Comptroller Division at Fort Jackson, he retired in 1982. Mr. Kemp was actively involved in the Columbia Philatelic Society, the Kiwanis Club of Columbia, and the SC Organization of Retired Executives. He was an active member of First Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School and served as a Boy Scout Leader. In his later years, he was an active member of Kathwood Baptist Church.
Mr. Kemp was a faithful and devoted husband, father, and friend. He was predeceased by his parents, Henry B. and Frances E. Kemp, Sr.; his brother, Albert O. Kemp; his wife and mother of his children, Sarilu H. Kemp; and his second wife, Kate L. Watson-Kemp. Surviving are his children, Kathy (Kemp) Illingworth (George), Henry B. Kemp III (Debra), Susan Coggins (Bill), and Albert O. Kemp; his step-mother, Katharine P. Kemp; his grandchildren, Cal and Elizabeth Coggins, Kara Illingworth Schaefer (Chris), and Charles Illingworth (Christine), and Andrew and Kathleen Kemp; his great-grandchildren, Ainsley and Elijah Schaefer, and his bridge partner and soul-mate, Jean Ingram.
The family will receive visitors on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, from 3:00 until 5:00 pm. His funeral will be held on Sunday, October 7, 2018, at Kathwood Baptist Church at 2:30 pm.
