Obituary

COL (R) Fleming H Jones retired to his forever peace on Friday, August 18, 2017 surrounded by family and friends. He was at home with his wife Dianne, son Fleming, daughter Shannon, daughter-in-law Bonnie and granddaughter Meagan by his side.

Fleming was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on July 28, 1943 to the late Isaac and Lois Jones. He grew up in Charlotte, NC and graduated from Myers Park High School in 1961 and from St. Andrews University in 1965.

In 1967, Fleming joined the US Army as a Second Lieutenant in the Medical Service Corps. During his 30-year Army career, Fleming served in Vietnam, Germany, and many posts in the United States, rising to the rank of Colonel. While in the Army, he received his MBA from Webster University and earned many awards, including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Combat Medical Badge, and the Order of Military Medical Merit.

Following his Army service, Fleming worked for Blue Cross of South Carolina, the University of South Carolina Health Clinic, and helped many aspiring birders at the Wild Birds Unlimited store in Columbia. Fleming was an active member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder and as a Deacon for many years.

Fleming leaves a loving wife of 54 years, Dianne, whom he adored, as well as son Fleming, Jr. (Bonnie), daughter Shannon (Ben) and grandchildren, Mary, Meagan, John, Garrett, Cole & Torin. He is also survived by his brothers Ike (Barbara) and Bobby (Janey) and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Fleming loved his God, his Country, and his family immensely, and will be fondly remembered for his passion for his wife, his loyalty to his friends, and his commitment to his country. His parents, Ike and Lois, and Fleming and his brothers, Ike and Bobby, created a wonderful family environment that extended from South Carolina to California and kept a diverse group of people (hippies and soldiers, conservatives and liberals, Christians and agnostics) united in love and support for one another.

Services will be held 2:30 o'clock, Sunday, August 20th in the Chapel at Shives Funeral Home, 7600 Trenholm Rd. Ext. Columbia, with Dr. Ellen Skidmore officiating. A reception will follow at the funeral home.
