Obituary

Colonel Bobby L. Huguley, US Army Reserves (Ret.), 90, of Columbia, died peacefully on Friday, November 27, 2020.

Born October 31, 1930, in McCormick, SC, he was a son of Laura Lowe Huguley and Claude Holloway Huguley. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Claude Holloway Huguley, Jr.

Colonel Huguley is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty Jones Huguley; sons, Bobby Jr. (Marsha) of Myrtle Beach, SC, James Claude (Nancy) of Nashville, TN; daughter, Alice Huguley Tracy (Tom) of Blythewood, SC; as well as six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Colonel Huguley was a graduate of McCormick High School and Clemson University. He later earned his master's degree from the University of South Carolina. While at Clemson, he served as President of the Baptist Student Union, a member of the Pershing Rifles Drill Platoon, and was recognized as a Distinguished Military Student. Upon graduating from Clemson, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, where he honorably served his country for 21 months. Following his active duty, he served in the Army Reserves for 24 years, achieving the rank of full Colonel.

After teaching junior high school for one year, he went to work with Liberty Life Insurance Company. Certified as a Chartered Life Underwriter, he later worked for Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company, which became Jefferson-Pilot, and ultimately Lincoln Financial Services.
Colonel Huguley served as President of the Columbia Life Underwriters Association and as the President of the Columbia Civitan Club, where he was a member for 61 years.

He believed in living out his lifetime Christian faith with his family, in his work, and through the church. As a member of the First Baptist Church of Columbia, he served on a Pulpit Committee, Chairman of the Stewardship Committee, and was elected honorary life deacon, after serving as a deacon for over 50 years. Colonel Huguley also served on the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.

The funeral service for Colonel Huguley will be held privately at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC. A private burial will take place in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. A livestream of the service will be available at 2 o'clock Monday, November 30th by visiting ShivesFuneralHome.com.
