Mrs. Corine Hussey Mitchum, 90, of Columbia, died Monday, May 18, 2015. Born in Sumter, SC on July 1, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Robert Marion Hussey and Delilah Rosa Riles Hussey. She was an active, longtime member of both St. John United Methodist Church and Rehoboth United Methodist Church where she served as the nursery teacher for a combined 48 years, and for her service she received a letter of recognition from the Bishop of the South Carolina United Methodist Conference. The 10th of 13 children, Corine was a graduate of the Edmunds High School class of 1943. After graduation, she worked for the Five and Dime Store, and during WWII, she was a telephone operator for General Telephone Company in Sumter. It was there that she met and married Thomas Mitchum in 1946 after his return from the war. After the birth of their first child, they moved to Myrtle Beach where their second child was born. The family then moved to Columbia in 1950 where their 3rd and 4th children were born, and Mrs. Mitchum worked as a secretary at Greenlawn Cemetery, and later with her husband at the Mitchum Company. She was a member of the Dentsville Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star #273.

Mrs. Mitchum is survived by her daughter, Patricia Mitchum Carrigan; sons, Robert W. Mitchum (Denise) and David M. Mitchum (Terri); grandchildren, Robert Mitchum, Jr. (Stephanie), Justin Mitchum, Jarrod Mitchum, Andrew Mitchum, Michael Carrigan (Kristen), Todd Mitchum (Alexa), and Kimberly Carrigan; great-grandchildren, Taylor Mitchum, Maddie Mitchum, and Jude Carrigan; sister, Virginia Drayton of Sumter; and faithful companion, Tucker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Thomas Odell Mitchum; son, Thomas "Tommy" Odell Mitchum, Jr.; son-in-law, Mike Carrigan; and grandson, Thomas Michael Mitchum.

A funeral service for Mrs. Mitchum will be held at 2 o'clock, Saturday, May 23rd, at Rehoboth United Methodist Church, with The Rev. Doug Benton officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be George Allen Hussey, John Hussey, Rick Hussey, Mike Hussey, Tim Hussey, Randy Banks, Thomas Allen Hussey, and O.B. Drayton. The family will receive friends Friday, from 5 until 7 o'clock, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, and other times at the residence.
