CPO Warren "Flash" Alfred Roberts, Jr., US Navy (R), 76, of Columbia, passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2023. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, on October 11, 1947, he was a son of the late Warren Alfred Roberts and Elizabeth Miller Roberts. He is survived by his loving wife, Jan Webb Roberts; the high school sweethearts shared a strong marriage of devotion and support to each other for 53 years.
He graduated from Valdosta High School and proudly joined the United States Navy in '69. He valued this service highly and attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Throughout his military service, Warren was devoted to his job and carried out his duties in an exemplary manner. Wherever he was assigned, many of his shipmates became lifelong friends. He retired in '90 after serving a total of 21 years and received many awards for his distinguished and exceptionally meritorious service.
Warren was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed bass fishing and hunting. He was an avid Atlanta Braves and Carolina Panthers fan. Warren is fondly remembered for his witty personality and dry sense of humor. He was stubborn, outspoken, and often came across as gruff. Although Warren was a big teddy bear and devout family man. He is loved and will be dearly missed by many.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Warren Alfred Roberts III (Bethany) and Julie Roberts Wiggins (Adam); grandchildren, Samantha Brooke Wiggins, Adam Blake Wiggins, Jr., and Charlotte Blair Wiggins; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by siblings, Sandra Roberts Allen (George), Beverly Ann Roberts Thomason, and Harvey Lewis Roberts (Midge).
The Memorial Service for CPO Roberts will be held at 2 o'clock on Friday, December 29th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext, Columbia, SC. Interment to follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1 o'clock at the funeral home.
