Obituary

CSM Robert "Bob" William Johns, US Army, Ret., was born September 16, 1946 in Mexico, Missouri to Mary E. Andersen and the late William Sayer Johns. Taps was played for CSM Johns on March 20, 2016 at Columbia, SC, after his battle with cancer.

CSM Johns is a 1964 graduate of Petaluma High School, Petaluma, California. He continued his education throughout his military career obtaining a Bachelor of Arts from the University of the State of New York, and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Maryland. CSM Johns is a graduate of several military Noncommissioned Officers leadership schools to include the US Army Sergeant Majors' Academy.

CSM Johns enlisted in the US Army upon graduation from high school, and rose through the ranks to retire as a Command Sergeant Major, having served as the Regimental Sergeant Major of the US Army Finance Corps and the Sergeant Major of the US Army Finance School. He served both in the Vietnam Conflict and the Persian Gulf War, and he served over 18 years in Europe in many staff and leadership positions. CSM Johns' awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, The Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal ninth award, and other war and peacetime medals, campaign ribbons, and decorations. He is also a Distinguished Member of the Finance Regiment.

Retiring from the US Army in 1998, CSM Johns worked as an independent consultant for numerous corporations dealing primarily with financial management functions for the US Army. This allowed his passion for golf to become the center of his retirement activities. He traveled the world, playing in Scotland, Germany and throughout the United States. Having joined the Fort Jackson Golf Club in 1994 he remained a strong supporter of the facility until his passing. CSM Johns served as Treasurer of the National Military Retired Golf Classic which has provided over 33 years of Memorial Day-week tournaments to thousands of retired members and their spouses. CSM Johns was a life member of both US Army Finance Corps Association and the Disabled American Veterans.

CSM Johns is survived by his wife of 37 years, Eleonore Johns of Columbia, SC; sons, Alan Johns of Columbia, SC, and Stefan Johns of Boston, MA; mother, Mary E. Andersen, 91, of Clarkdale, AZ; and sister, Mary Ellen Johns of Idaho. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Stephen Elgin Johns.

A service for CSM Johns will be held at 11:30 o'clock, Wednesday, March 23rd at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel. Burial will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10:30 o'clock.
