CW03 Jan Michael Barkan, US Coast Guard (Ret.), 72, of Columbia, died on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. Born in New York City, NY, he was the son of the late Carol Barkan and Max Barkan. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Andrea Gerstle.
Jan had a special place in his heart for his wife, Joanne Covey Barkan. Married for 52 years, they made many wonderful memories during his time in the military, living in various locations. He will be remembered as an honorable veteran, loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He began his career in the US Air Force. Following his enlistment in the US Air Force he joined the US Coast Guard, where he served 26 years and reached the rank of CW03 His toughest duty station and one of the most rewarding was rebuilding USCG Miami, Florida housing after Hurricane Andrew in 1992. He was a member of multiple societies throughout his life and was especially passionate about the Pacific Lodge #325, where he was the Past Master; the American Legion Post 195; the Tall Cedars of Lebanon; the Jamil Shrine Temple, where he was awarded 33rd Degree Scottish Rite on August 19, 2023. He was a member at the Tree of Life Congregation in Columbia.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Barkan; son, Craig Barkan; grandsons, Andrew Barkan and William Barkan; nieces, Cara Kaufman and Morgan Gerstle as well as sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Game and Rae Covey.
The funeral service for Mr. Barkan will be held at 9:30 o'clock, Friday, July 26th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext, Columbia, SC with burial at 11 o'clock at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia.
