Obituary

CW3 Albert Dempsy Johnson, US Army (Ret.), 77, of Blythewood, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2024. Born in Washington, D.C., on August 23, 1946, he was a son of the late William McKinley Johnson and Mabel Johnson Johnson.

He was the loving husband to Mrs. Deborah Brooks Johnson. Albert and Deborah later discovered they were born exactly six days apart at Columbia Hospital for Women and their mothers even crossed paths during their hospital stay. Little did they know, their babies would marry 19 years later and have a long, successful marriage of 58 years. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and mentor to all who met him. Albert will be dearly missed, and his legacy will never be forgotten.

CW3 Johnson was one of the very first Eagle Scouts in Washington, D.C. and graduated from Cardozo Senior High School, where he is listed in the Hall of Fame for swimming and diving. He earned his associate degree from Washington Technical Institute, a Bachelor of Science from the University of the District of Columbia, and a Master of Public Administration from Haywood University of North Carolina.

Throughout his life, he wore many hats and held numerous remarkable career titles. CW3 Johnson retired from the District of Columbia Fire Department after 30 plus years. He proudly served 20 years in the United States Army and retired as Chief Warrant Officer. CW3 Johnson later worked for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and coordinated missions for the National Disaster Medical System. In his most recent years, he worked with the Richland County Sheriff's Department and served the community as a Senior Deputy and Senior Coordinator for Project H.O.P.E.

CW3 Johnson was a member of the City Firefighters Association Washington, D.C. Local 36, the International Association of Firefighters, American Legion Post 215, South Carolina Combat Veterans, and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Laniece Felton (Eugene), Michael Johnson, Daniel Johnson (Rachel), and Angela Johnson; grandchildren, Ketia, Devon, Tasha, Jerod, Raven, Trevon and Mekali; great-grandchildren, Zara, Luca, and Zaden; brother, David Johnson; Brother-in-Law Vernon; as well as a host of loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his three brothers.

The Funeral Service for CW3 Johnson will be held at 12 o'clock on Wednesday, August 21st, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 11 o'clock. Burial will follow at 2 o'clock at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC.
