Damián Luis Planas, 76, of Arecibo, Puerto Rico passed away on August 23, 2023.
Born in June 1947 to Damián Planas and America Reboyras, he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics and Education from the University of Puerto Rico.
In 1979, Damián left his beloved birthplace in search of opportunity, building a new life for his family in Columbia, South Carolina. Known for his dedication, work ethic, and warm sense of humor, Damián went on to have a successful 30 year career as a Systems Engineer for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina. He made many lifelong friendships within the Blue Cross family, where he coached softball and was known by many generations there as the Blue Cross Santa. Active throughout his life in the local Hispanic community, he volunteered in local outreach programs and maintained close ties with Puerto Rico.
Damián retired from Blue Cross in 2012, spending his remaining years on hobbies, family, and spoiling his four grandchildren Juliana, Zeke, Alex, and Miguel. A devoted family man, and loyal friend, he is survived by his spouse Milly, his sister Elma, and his four children Pilar, Jose, Dennise, and Gabriel. He made a lasting impact on everyone he knew. He will be missed, but never forgotten.
The family wishes to thank the staff of NHC Parklane for their wonderful, caring help and support. Services will be held at a time yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association or the Oliver Gospel Mission.
The memorial mass for Mr. Planas will be held at 10 o'clock on Saturday, September 16th, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 100 Polo Raod, Columbia, SC.
