David Everett Bates, 73, of Columbia, died on Friday, July 3, 2026. Born November 23, 1952, in Columbia, he was a son of Clyde Anderson Bates, Jr. and Alice McGrady Burk. Mr. Bates honorably served his country in the US Army. Throughout his career he was employed in various jobs in the Midlands area. Most recently Mr. Bates worked as a CNA at William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was a volunteer with the Community Action Team at Richland County Sherriff’s office and a member of the Chinese Christian Church in West Columbia. Mr. Bates enjoyed traveling to the Philippines, weekend trips to Cherokee, NC, and playing his guitar and piano.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Endrina Bates; stepson, Ryan James Endrina of the Philippines; siblings, Clyde Anderson “Andy” Bates, III (Karen) of Blythewood, Beth Ford Scott (Rod) of Lexington, SC, and William Edward Bates (Juliet) of Columbia. He also leaves behind a multitude of nieces, nephews, and other extended family. Mr. Bates was preceded in death by his parents.
The funeral service for Mr. Bates will be held privately.
