David Lawrence Chastain, 82, of Columbia, died on Saturday, January 15, 2022. Born in St. Augustine, FL, on March 10, 1939, he was a son of the late Lawrence Benson and Miriam Cornforth Chastain of Tampa, Fl. Mr. Chastain was a graduate of Vanderbilt University where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity and played on the golf team. As young adult, he was the president of the KA Alumni Association in Charlotte, NC and was a long-standing member of the Rotary International Club in Columbia, SC.
Although Tampa was his home, he and his wife, Linda relocated to Columbia in 1980. Together, they spent their time owning various small businesses while raising their two daughters. Mr. Chastain was an avid fisherman and golfer.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Linda Lehman Chastain; his daughters and their husbands, Sally and Tom Sadler and Susan and Brian Doyle; grandchildren, Megan and Jimmy Doyle; and his nephew, John Chastain and wife Rhian. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William Wirt Chastain.
The family would like to acknowledge Sylvia Martin in appreciation for her devoted and loving care in recent months as well as to his business partner and lifelong friend Bill Oakley.
A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Chastain will be held at a later date. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family and will announce the future plans.
