Deborah Ann "Debbie" Toney of Blythewood, SC, passed away from complications of congestive heart failure on November 29, 2024. She was surrounded by her loving family. Born on June 14, 1949, in Greenville, South Carolina, to the late Gerald R. Lee and Francis E. Lee, her family later moved to Columbia in 1960. Debbie's life was marked by her steadfast faith, deep love for her family, and a joyful spirit that touched everyone she met.
Debbie was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on July 22, 1963, in Lake Elizabeth, embracing her faith as the foundation of her life. On April 27, 1968, she married the love of her life, Duncan R. Toney. Together, they built a home in Blythewood and raised their two children, Brian and Brianna. Her patience, love, and kindness made her a wonderful mother, and later a great friend to her children.
In addition to her husband and children, she shared an incredibly close bond with her mother, affectionately known as "Granny." The pair were inseparable. After being a devoted daughter, wife, and mother, she became a grandmother to a granddaughter, Alexandra—a role she always treasured.
A dedicated teaching assistant for 30 years, Debbie's kindness and patience made her a beloved figure among students and colleagues at Bethel Hanberry Elementary School. She found joy in helping others and carried that same generosity into her personal life, always offering her time, love, and support to family and friends.
Debbie is survived by her husband of 56 years, Duncan; her beloved children, Brian Toney (Gina) and Brianna Dumas (Todd); her granddaughter, Alexandra; her mother, Francis Lee; her sisters, Judy Acanfora and Sheree Lee; her loyal dog and companion, Jack; and a large circle of extended family and friends who will miss her dearly. She leaves behind countless cherished memories and a legacy of love that will endure in the hearts of those who knew her.
The visitation with the family will be at The Farm in Ridgeway (3248 US-21, Ridgeway SC 29130) at 2:00pm and a Memorial Service will follow at 4:00pm on Sunday, December 15th. The family invites all who knew her to join them in honoring her memory and the joy she brought to the people around her.
Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
