Obituary

Derek Joseph Joye of Columbia, SC, passed away on May 10, 2024. Derek was born in Greenville, SC. His family relocated to Irmo, SC where he attended and graduated from Irmo High School, Class of 1988. While at Irmo High School, he formed lifelong friends that he has always cherished.

Derek attended Coastal Carolina University and was a proud graduate of The University of South Carolina. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

He established his work ethic at an early age, working at various jobs during his high school and college years. Upon graduating from The University of South Carolina he began his working career at The Cregger Company. Later he became a successful salesman for CertainTeed, which laid the foundation for his career in the roofing industry.

Derek was the founder and owner of Joye Roofing, having established the company in 2008. He was a licensed contractor in good standing with the licensing board of South Carolina. His business principles were reliability, quality work, honesty, integrity, professionalism, and the highest ethical standards. He enjoyed working side by side with his sister, Laurin, who was an integral member of Joye Roofing from the beginning. Derek was proud that Joye Roofing continuously received an A+ rating from the Columbia Better Business Bureau.

He enjoyed playing golf with his lifelong friends, attending USC and Clemson football games, relaxing at his lake house with family and friends. He loved shag dancing which he learned at an early age from his father and Uncle Ron.

He was the patriarch of his family, assuming the responsibilities of making sure everyone's needs were met. He was a dedicated and great husband, father, son, uncle, and friend to all. He enjoyed spending time with his wife of 24 years at The Forest Lake Club, and on their annual beach trips. He was proud of his daughter Madelyn who follows in his footsteps, attending his alma mater, The University of South Carolina. He was delighted with son Layton's love of golf and participation on the AC Flora High School golf team. Derek will always be remembered as a friend's friend. His generosity extended to the homeless, to causes who benefitted from his donated resources, and others' needs – both individuals and organizations. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, but everyone will cherish the fond memories shared throughout the years and his infectious laugh.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Horton Joye; daughter, Madelyn Raley Joye, son, Layton Joseph Joye; his mother, Suzanne Gosnell Joye; sister Laurin Clark (Scott); father-in-law Philip Brice Horton Sr.; mother in law Kay Larrabee Horton; sister in law Danna Horton Misenheimer (John); brother in law Philip Brice Horton Jr.; nieces Alexandra Warner (Weston), Kathryn Starnes (Travis), Mary Elizabeth Brooks, Karsyn Misenheimer; nephew Hayden Misenheimer; great nephew Sullivan Warner; uncles Ron Joye (Deborah), David Gosnell (Carol), Dan Gosnell (Kay), Larry Gosnell (Victoria), John Gosnell (Susana); aunts Faye Owens, Kaye Joye, and Marilyn Gower.
