Dianne Campbelle Butler was born in Charlotte, NC in 1946 to Gene and Rose Campbelle. At an early age she moved with her family to Columbia, SC, where she graduated from Eau Claire High School, class of 1964. Upon graduation she married her high school sweetheart, James Butler, and they began a life together that would last more than 60 years.
In 1966 their son Doug was born and became the pride and joy of her life.
James served as an Army officer and helicopter pilot, so they were often separated, but Dianne enjoyed being an Army wife and the opportunity to travel all over the United States and Europe.
After James retired from the Army in 1985, he and Dianne moved to Arizona where James was employed by Lockheed Martin Corporation. Dianne enjoyed a successful career as a Real Estate Broker with the REMAX Alliance Group and retired in 2008. Dianne and James then moved back to Columbia to be near her mother.
Dianne was a member of Spring Valley Country Club (SVCC) where she enjoyed playing golf and attending social events. She was also a member of Northeast Presbyterian Church (NEPC) and the Good News Sunday School Class. She was active in the NEPC Quilters and sewing groups. Throughout her life, she enjoyed crafts, reading, and music. She was an athlete, artist, a Red Hat Lady, a fierce scrabble competitor, and an exceptional chef. Unfortunately, Dianne struggled with dementia in recent years. The disease stole her fondest memories, obscured familiar faces, and ultimately consumed her life. Dianne went to be with the Lord on 21 January 2025.
Dianne is survived by her husband, James of Columbia and her son, Doug Butler (Lisa) of Johnson City, TN. She is also survived by her brothers, John Campbelle of Walterboro, SC and Robert Campbelle (Susan) of Bristol, VA; her sisters, Paulette Villarreal (Ed) of Snellville, GA and Phyllis Smith of Hamlet, NC, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dianne was predeceased by her parents, Gene and Rose Campbelle, and her sister, Rosemary Bledsoe of Ninety Six, SC.
The memorial service for Mrs. Butler will be held at 1 o'clock, Saturday, February 1st at Northeast Presbyterian Church, 601 Polo Rd, Columbia, SC 29223. A private graveside service will be held at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery.
There will be a reception of guests and visitation at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC on Friday, January 31st from 4 until 6 o'clock.
