Dolores Clarke Walker, wife of John Sadler Walker, 95, of Columbia, died on Sunday, September 24, 2023. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on October 13, 1927, to Agnes Pauline Ash Clarke and Sumpter Mills Clarke, Jr.
Dolores Clarke Walker graduated in 1949 from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville with a B.A. in Home Economics Textiles. While at the University, she was president of Chi Omega Sorority. She was one of two girls selected by the fraternities, the sororities and the student body to run for the title of Miss Tennessee. At that time, it was one of the highest honors that a girl could receive at the University. That honor was given for friendship, personality and beauty. She indeed possessed all three. Dolores was also elected as the sponsor of the University of Tennessee's Band of the Southland. Upon graduation she was listed among the Who's Who of American Colleges and Universities.
Dolores Clarke Walker was married on February 24, 1950 to John Sadler Walker of Columbia, South Carolina. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Columbia for many years where she served as president of the Women of the Church, a member of the Sunday School Class and received an honorary life membership. Mrs. Walker was a member of the "Bridge Club", the Junior League of Columbia, The Columbia Ball, The Quadrille Club, the Centurion Society and The Fort Nightly Book Club. She was also a member of the Ann Pamela Cunningham Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Dolores was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her husband of 73 years, John Sadler Walker; her daughters, Agnes Pauline Walker Yetman and Amanda DeLeon Walker Taylor; and grandchildren, Mary Margaret "Meda" Yetman, Ann DeLeon Taylor Corontzes (Beach), John Walker Taylor and Sarah Lawrence Yetman. In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Joe E. Taylor, Jr.
The funeral service for Mrs. Walker will be held at 2:30 o'clock on Thursday, September 28th, in the Sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, 1324 Marion St, Columbia, SC, with the Rev. Dr. Derek W.H. Thomas and The Rev. David H. Lauten officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in Jackson Hall at the church. A private burial will precede the service in the Churchyard of First Presbyterian Church. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
