Donald M. Upp, 92, of Elgin, died Monday, March 17, 2014. Born in Greenfield, Ohio, on December 10, 1921, he was a son of the late Milton Connor Upp and Minnie Brookover Upp. A pilot since he was 16 years old, Mr. Upp served as an Army Air Cadet pilot during World War II. Donald attended Xavier University, and went on to become an art director with NCR in Dayton, Ohio. He later enjoyed a career as a pilot and flight instructor. Donald moved to Columbia in 1991. He loved motorcycles and was still riding regularly.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Ann Upp; children, Mona Heartman (Dick), Brian Upp, Patrick Valentie, Alicia Valentie, Erin Valentie, Regina Mims (Tripp), Dawn Lee (Richard), and Christopher Valentie (Heather); grandchildren, Mark, Alison, Melissa, Kristen, Jamie, Charlotte, Timmy, Abigail, Alaina, Gianna, Rachel, Noelle, Preston, Alta and Lilly. In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by a grandson, Elijah Mims.

The funeral service for Mr. Upp will be held 11 o'clock, Thursday, March 20th, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Dr, Columbia. Following the service, friends are invited to visit with the family at Hope Baptist Church, 2117 Clemson Road, Columbia. The family will also receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock, Wednesday evening, at the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date at Gilboa Cemetery, Rainsboro, Ohio.
