Born Doris Morgan on August 27, 1928 in Spindale, North Carolina to Eugene Vernon Morgan and Carra Lavender Morgan, Doris grew up in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
After graduating from Spartanburg High School, Doris worked in the records of the sales department at the Belk Hudson Department Store. She married Billy E. Broom, Sr. on January 1, 1948 and left the work force two months before the birth of their first-born son to become a stay at home mom and homemaker for the rest of her adult life. The family moved to Columbia in 1954, where Doris became a Cub Scout Den Leader for six years. Doris and her husband were charter members of Northeast Presbyterian Church.
Doris is survived by her sons, Billy E. Broom, Jr. (Rhonda) of Timmonsville and Michael J. Broom (Susan) of Columbia; granddaughters, Amy Broom, Marianne Patterson, and Shannon Bowen; and great grandchildren, Alex and Cecelia Wellman, and Grayson, Gabriel and Reese Bowen.
Doris was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Billy E. Broom, Sr.; and her siblings, Floree Linsey, Margaret Batson, Leona Hendrix, Earline Morgan, Bill Morgan and Ora Morrow.
A funeral service will be held 2 o'clock on Friday, November 11, 2016 at Northeast Presbyterian Church, 601 Polo Road, Columbia. The Rev. Dr. George D. Crow, III will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1 o'clock. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
