Obituary

Mrs. Dorothy May Chandler Jacobs passed away on July 6, 2014. She was the daughter of John Herbert Chandler and Geulieme Eulalie Mellette Chandler and grew up in the community between Wedgefield and Stateburg, SC. Born in 1913, Mrs. Jacobs achieved her 100th birthday on October 20, 2013.

She completed nurses' training at Tuomey Hospital School of Nursing in Sumter, SC, in 1934, and worked as a nurse until her marriage in 1938 to Dr. Paul Jacobs. She lived in Asheville, NC, for many years until she and Dr. Jacobs retired to the Columbia area in 1965.

A life-long Methodist, she was a founding member of Groce United Methodist Church in Asheville. She attended Main Street and Windsor United Methodist Churches in Columbia.

Predeceased by her husband of 50 years and her parents and five siblings, she is survived by her four children, Paul (Martha) Jacobs, Jr., of Ormond Beach, FL, John (Cozette) Jacobs of New Smyrna Beach, FL, Sarah (Flaminio) Jacobs Sanchez of Columbia, SC, and Dr. David Jacobs (Dianne) of Greenville, SC; 11 grandchildren, John Jacobs Jr. of Cocoa Beach, FL, Steve Jacobs of Palm Beach Shore, FL, Joe Jacobs of Bozeman, MT, Mike Jacobs of Austin, TX, Dr. Carlos Sanchez of St. Augustine, FL, Dr. Miriam McAtee of Richmond, VA, Rachel Thwing, PhD. of Portland, OR, Carmen Sanchez, PhD. of Durham, NC, Charlotte Brackett, Dr. David Jacobs, Jr, and Matt Jacobs, all of Greenville, SC; 11 great-grandchildren, and 17 nieces and nephews.

She will be remembered for her kindness and for her loving spirit; she was a wonderful influence in the lives of many.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 10, at 11:00 a.m. at Windsor United Methodist Church, 9500 Windsor Lake Blvd, Columbia, with burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service. Shives Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Epworth Children's Home, 2900 Millwood Ave, Columbia, SC 29205. We would like to thank the staff at The Palmettos of Parklane Assisted Living and Lutheran Hospice for the kindnesses they showed to our mother.
