Dorothy Lonsdale Derakhshan, 85, of Columbia, died Friday, August 9, 2019. Born June 15, 1934 in Morristown, NJ, she was a daughter of Alan and Elma Mae Beatty Lonsdale.
Dorothy, always helping others, spent her career as a dental assistant caring for patients in several states. She was a writer, poet, and volunteer. Donating her time at the Richland County Public Library, assisting immigrants to learn English as their second language. She was an avid reader, bird watcher and loved to take nature walks and work in her garden.
Survivors include her children, Ramon Gil (Jennifer), Ricardo L. Gil and Arturo A. Gil; her sister, Elma Wilbanks, (Jack); grandchildren, Lily and Gabrielle Gil; great-grandson, Logan Gil; granddaughter-in-law, Kristin B. Gil; as well as a niece and three nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Miguel J. Gil; and a sister, Caroline von Rosenberg.
The funeral service for Mrs. Dorothy, will be held 2 o'clock, Saturday, August 17th Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC. The committal and interment will be held at 5 o'clock, at Oakdale Presbyterian Church, 12585 Hwy 55 West, Clover, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1 o'clock at the church.
